Leader:  In the Summertime ….

Broadwater Green celebrated Playday 2012 along with rest of the country on Wednesday August 1st with thousands of kids enjoying the summertime fun. The event organised by the Worthing Playday Association was free and included a fire engine and water slide from Worthing Fire Station; juggling and circus skills from CircusSeen.org; a custard pool, decorating car wrecks; tug of war and giant bubbles from Broadwater Manor School. Splash FM and Dave Benson Phillips provided the entertainment on stage. It was a great event organised by local people and showed what can be done when people work together.

Homefield Park hosted the popular East Worthing Festival on Saturday August 4th and the park was packed with hundreds of people joining in the the community summertime atmosphere. There was live music, belly dancers, space hopper races and a giant car boot sale. Mick from Mick’s Garage was seen flipping burgers for the hungry masses. Again local people worked together to make this year one of the best ever and the summertime sun shone.

Tarring Rec saw an estimated 2,000 people on Thursday August 9th attend the third Picnic in the Park basking in the glorious summertime weather.  Tarring Residents and Community (TRAC) and other local members of the community including Tarring Councillor Norah Fisher and her help dog Herbie, organised the event which included kite surfing, zumba dancing, football in the MUGA, biscuit making, a mini police car and Circus Scene once again. No dog show this time – that’s on Wednesday August 15th.

Northbrook Rec was put to good use on Saturday August 11th with hundreds attending the launch of the Phoenix Drop In organised by Laura Scott.  Laura managed to acquire a 300 foot obstacle course and put several local councillors to the test to the great amusement of everyone else.  Other entertainments included zumba dancing, football and both the police and fire service with their vehicles. The event was also blessed by beautiful summertime weather.  And Laura is already planning a repeat for next year.

Four community summertime events which show just what can be done by local community involvement.  Let’s harness that goodwill and true community spirit to work together to make Worting a shining light throughout the year and not just in the Summertime.

Oh and weren’t the Olympics on at the same time?

NEWS FROM THE PAST WEEK

ALBION IN THE COMMUNITY

Monday 6th August – West Sussex Cabinet Member for Finance Michael Brown published his decision today to award Albion in the Community £15,000 for their “Albion Goals” project in Kitty’s Field, Dominion Road, Broadwater.  The project will use the power of football to engage with young unemployed providing opportunities to obtain qualifications, apprenticeships and even employment. The money was awarded from the West Sussex Big Society Fund which needs support of the local County Councillor.  The local Broadwater County Councillor, Lib Dem Alan Rice, was more than happy to pledge his support for this worthwhile project and to recommend the granting of funds. The Executive Decision is subject to a “call-in” within seven days but the possibility of a “call-in” is remote.

Alan said: “I have been aware of the good work Albion in the Community has achieved through the ‘Albion Goals’ project elsewhere and their attempts at obtaining funding from other sources without success.  This is just the kind of project Worthing’s young need to help them find those opportunities for a good start in working life and I was delighted to be able to give my support.  I was even more delighted when West Sussex recognised the worth of Albion Goals and granted the funds.”

PICNIC IN THE PARK

Thursday 9th August – Tarring Rec saw today the third annual Picnic in the Park which attracted an estimated 2,000 people who enjoyed the fun in the glorious sunshine.  Arena entertainment was provided by zumba dancing, gymnastics and a display by Dragonflies. Youth Mayor Cam Hughes opened the event and local Lib Dem Tarring Councillor Nora Fisher was the Mistress of Ceremonies. A competition was held for children to get their programmes stamped for attending the various events including Circus Scene, a police car, a fire engine and biscuit making. Other local councillors attending included Alan Rice, Clive Roberts, Robin Rogers, Deputy Mayor Bob Smytherman and Vino Vonojan.  Norah was involved from the start as Chair but will not be able to take on the role next year as she is the Mayor’s consort – volunteers please.

Norah said: “Every year the Picnic in the Park gets better due to the great support of the local Tarring community.  I would like to thank everyone who ensured the great success and please get involved to make next year even better – I’ll be there”

OBSTACLES AT PHOENIX DROP IN

Saturday 11th August – Local councillors took up the challenge from local heroine Laura Scott to tackle a 300 foot obstacle course at today’s Phoenix Drop In launch at Northbrook Rec. Those who ran the gauntlet included Roy Barraclough, Michael Cloake, James Doyle, Dan Humphries, Diane Jones, Keith Sunderland, Vino Vinojan and Youth Mayor Cam Hughes and Deputy Youth Mayor Brogan Kirkby-Bott. Others watching were Mayor Charles James, Alan Rice, Robin Rogers, Hazel Thorpe, Deputy Mayor Bob Smytherman and Tom Wye.  Laura also completed the course.  Today’s launch was a very successful event with around 50 stands and entertainment provided by both zumba dancing and a football competition. Laura is already planning the event for next year.
