About Bob Smytherman

I have been a Local Borough Councillor for the Liberal Democrats in Worthing representing Tarring Ward since 2002.

I was the Executive Member for Planning and Economic Development in 2003/4 during the Liberal Democrat administration. I currently live on my own in Goring, no children, For many years I worked in Old Nick’s burger Bar in Worthing after leaving college, before starting my own business in 2000 running a Coffee Shop concession in Courts furniture store in Shoreham.Courts later went out of business so I took over a Cafe in Littlehampton.

I was previously a part time Night Manager at the Chatsworth Hotel since 2003.

I was a Cycling Instructor for West Sussex County Council teaching Year 6 and 7 children from local schools. I lost that job following a campaign against the policy of the County Council to introduce charging for the courses.

Following that campaign Cycle training is still free for children in West Sussex although I am know longer a Casual Cycling Instructor in West Sussex. I am sure there is no connection between the County Council U-turn on charging and me losing my job!

I was leader of the Lib Dem group on Worthing Council from 2004 – 2008 and reelected to represent Tarring Ward in May 2006 , 2010 and 2014

Outside Politics Bob has been a Governor of two local Catholic schools in Worthing,Chatsmore High and English Martyrs Primary for many years until I was elected to the County Council in 2009 and 2013

Bob is also Chairman of the residents association which is responsible for the day to day mangement of the block of flats where Bob lives as well as being

Chairman of the Federation of Private Residents Assocaitions which advise similar groups on leasehold property matters.

I also a Governor for the Alternative Provision College (APC) responsible for ‘Out of School Learning in West Sussex.

In 2012 I became the Deputy Mayor of Worthing and Mayor of the Borough for 2013/14 and supporting local charities Worthing & Arun Mind where I am a trustee , Guild Care where I am a member and Worthing Alzheimers Society to raise awareness on mental health issues across the age spectrum.
