Please come to Worthing High campaign public meeting on Tuesday 10th July, 7.30 pm

by Press Officer on 9 July, 2012

Dear friends and supporters

Teachers in the NUT and NASUWT unions at Worthing High School will be on strike this Wednesday 11th July, protesting against their governors’ and head’s plans to convert to an academy.  They have voted by large majorities to take action.

In spite of overwhelming opposition by teachers and staff (91% of teachers voted in favour of strike action in indicative ballots some weeks ago) and growing opposition amongst parents and the wider community, the Head and governors have now sent their formal application to convert to the Department for Education.

From the outset of our campaign, Worthing High Academy Action Group (WHAAG), has fully backed the teachers at the school. We are parents who value our teachers and are appalled that they have not been permitted the opportunity to fully explain their objections to their governors. Like the teachers, our own objections have been dismissed and ignored by the school. That’s why the focus of our campaign continues to be to force a meaningful and democratic consultation, allowing  parents and all stakeholders the chance hear all sides of the debate.

Everyone should support the staff and parents at Worthing High School.

Please come to our public meeting on Tuesday 10th July, 7.30 pm, at Cricket Club, Manor Sports Ground, Broadwater (enter via Georgia Avenue by car), where we will share ideas for the campaign ahead and discuss our ongoing concerns.

Please support Worthing High teachers on strike:-

* Rush personal or union branch messages of support to: Secretary@west-sussex.nut.org.uk and worthinghighacademyactiongroup@hotmail.com

* Get down to the picket line on Weds from 7.45am to 9.15am (Worthing High, South Farm Rd BN14 7AR)

(bring home-made posters/placards – use WHAAG campaign colour purple if you can!)

* Attend the strikers’ rally on Weds from 9.30am at St.Marys’s Church in Broadwater where there will be speakers from the teaching unions explaining why they feel they must strike and Alasdair Smith, from the Anti-Academies Alliance.

For excellent background information on Academies, Free Schools and how to campaign against them, visit http://antiacademies.org.uk/

Please share this message as widely as possible.

Looking forward to seeing you at both of these important events.

WHAAG Committee and Tarring County Councillor Bob Smytherman
