West Sussex Meals on Wheels customers will be able to enjoy a new range of salads from January.

The menu includes a new and improved selection served in segmented containers which should enhance the freshness and presentation of the dishes.

The salads, supplied by Sussex-based Meals on Wheels providers, Nibbles, are on a four-week rotation menu – and will also be available in County Council Day Centres.

Catering Manager John Figgins said: “We wanted to improve the range of salads to our Meals on Wheels and Day Centre customers.

“We have done this by creating dishes we hope will become new favourites, such as poached salmon, honey roasted ham and various ploughman’s dishes.

“Care and attention has been taken to source improved ingredients such as North Atlantic prawns and free range eggs.

“We also wanted to keep the lettuce, pasta or potato and the meat or cheese items separate so to keep everything in the best condition during transport, using new segmented containers.

“The salads are crafted in Sussex and wherever possible by using ingredients grown and sourced in the county.”

The Meals on Wheels service is delivered by the WRVS across West Sussex with the drivers also able to provide a ‘safe and well’ check to ensure people who use the service are okay on the day of delivery.

An assessment from a GP, WSCC or hospital is not needed to purchase Meals on Wheels – people can also contact the service direct.

Peter Catchpole, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, said:

“The Meals on Wheels service provides a vital service, so I am pleased we are able to offer our residents more choice.

“A good variety of flavours have been used and, wherever possible, the salads will contain local produce.

“I hope our residents and customers enjoy the new varieties, as well as some of the old favourites, and we will be closely monitoring feedback.”
